CCA Announces Scholarship Selections

The Coastal Conservation of North Carolina -- an association dedicated to preserving and protecting our marine fisheries for current and future generations -- announced that it has selected two students to receive a $1,000 scholarship each to further their educational goals in the area of Marine Science.

"We look for students doing work in the area of Marine Science who have projects that will be of benefit long term to the fishermen of North Carolina" said Stephen Ammons, Executive Director of CCA NC.

After reviewing the candidates for the two $1,000 scholarships for 2009, the selection committee reached an unanimous agreement on two students -- Ken Riley from East Carolina University Department of Biology and Nate Giraldi from the University of North Carolina Institute of Marine Sciences.

Ken Riley is seeking his doctoral degree at East Carolina with his project focused on American Shad and River Herring.  His research work will model various elements of essential nursery habitat for these species in an effort to improve the management of these types to insure a healthy resource. He will include important environmental factors such as river flow and predator - prey relationship.

Nate Giraldi is seeking his doctorate also in Marine Sciences. His thesis will conduct research on oyster sanctuaries to determine optimal planting strategies, methods to improve growth and survival, identify predators to understand and improve success of artificial reefs, and measure recruitment to the artificial oyster reefs. Oysters filter our coastal waters and are important in improving water quality and habitat.

Both of these projects are vital to the overall health of North Carolina fisheries and are consistent with the many efforts of CCA NC to improve our marine resources.

The stated purpose of the Coastal Conservation Association North Carolina is to advise and educate the public on conservation of marine resources.  The objective of CCA is to conserve, promote and enhance the present and future availability of these coastal resources for the benefit and enjoyment of the general public.

Donate Boat, Trailer, Car to Help Rec Fishery

Coastal Conservation Association NC wants to get the word out about a new donation program.

If you are looking to get rid of any vehicles, including trailers, boats, campers etc. you can call the following toll free number, 1-877-CCA-1775 or follow a link from their website www.ccanc.org.

Donating is an excellent way to deal with vehicles you don't want. When buying a new vehicle you could either trade it in, which usually means you get less value than what it is worth. You could sell it, which means dealing with a lot of inconvenience. Many people are just not in a position where they can fix the vehicle themselves. There's the DMV paperwork, smog inspections etc. And then there is the advertising, time and effort in trying to sell it.

CCA is offering an option that means getting an itemized tax deduction (which could be very timely at year end) for it's full, true value while helping CCA North Carolina  (money stays in the state). CCA has partnered with a company called Charitable Auto Resiurces that takes care of every detail to make the transaction hassle free!

If you are thinking of unloading something, please consider it.   FOR THE FISH!

CCA NC looking to Grow Chapters

The Coastal Conservation Association wants to get the word out that they are ramping up their efforts. The focus is to boost communication and awareness about the issues in our state through Voter Voice and make sure the health and access of our marine resources don't backslide while we are all looking at other concerns like political elections and gas prices.

CCA's political influence comes from the number of it's members and CCA hopes to raise the membership in the existing chapters, jump start some "floundering" ones and create some new ones. Some targeted possibilities are Fayetteville- Lumberton, Roanoke Rapids, Southern Wake county (Fuquay-HollySprings-Apex), college universities and others.

Anyone that is interested in joining ($25), sponsoring events for existing chapters or being a part of the leadership group of a new CCA chapter in their community should email jim@ccanc.org or call the state office at 919-781-3474 . CCA North Carolina Names Stephen Ammons as its New Executive Director

November 15, 2007
RALEIGH - Stephen Ammons of Zebulon has been named
executive director of the Coastal Conservation Association of
North Carolina, the stateĂƒÆ’Ă‚Â¢ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¡Ă‚Â¬ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¾Ă‚Â¢s largest marine conservation

ĂƒÆ’Ă‚Â¢ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¡Ă‚Â¬Ăƒâ€¦Ă¢â‚¬Å“This organization is a vital component to all areas of conservation efforts and with the continued support of volunteers and a growing membership, the CCA will be heard all over the state. 2007 CCA NC Inside & Out Results

What a weekend!!  Many thanks to all who participated this past weekend at our 3rd Annual Inside & Out Tournament!!!  The forecast held out and you could not have asked for a better weekend on the coastĂƒÆ’Ă‚Â¢ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¡Ă‚Â¬Ăƒâ€Ă‚Â¦ĂƒÆ’Ă‚Â¢ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¡Ă‚Â¬Ăƒâ€¦Ă¢â‚¬Å“Chamber of CommerceĂƒÆ’Ă‚Â¢ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¡Ă‚Â¬Ăƒâ€Ă‚ weekend at the beach, as they would say!!

The festivities began on Friday night at Tournament Headquarters, Morehead Marine, for the Crystal Coast Chapter Banquet and Tournament CaptainĂƒÆ’Ă‚Â¢ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¡Ă‚Â¬ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¾Ă‚Â¢s Party.  SmithfieldĂƒÆ’Ă‚Â¢ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¡Ă‚Â¬ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¾Ă‚Â¢s Chicken and Barbeque provided all the food participants could eat and Atlantic Distributors in New Bern donated all of the adult beverages from Budweiser!  The banquet was a great success and many thanks go out to all that came down and took part.

By 9:00PM on Friday we had close to 40 boats signed up and ready to hit the water on Saturday.  Lines in at 7:30 AM on Saturday had anglers stretched from offshore at the Big Rock down to the Swansboro Hole to inshore from the Haystacks down to SwansboroĂƒÆ’Ă‚Â¢ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¡Ă‚Â¬Ăƒâ€Ă‚¦if there were fish around, there was a boat catching them!  First fish weighed in was from Team Juggerknot, and it set the pace for what would be an exciting afternoon at the official tournament weigh station, Town Creek Marina in BeaufortĂƒÆ’Ă‚Â¢ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¡Ă‚Â¬Ăƒâ€Ă‚¦a monster doormat flounder tipping the scales at just over 7 pounds!!

After the dust settled, tournament participants headed back to Morehead Marine for steamed oysters (which didnĂƒÆ’Ă‚Â¢ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¡Ă‚Â¬ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¾Ă‚Â¢t last long!) and a Lowcountry Boil with Atlantic Beverage again providing all of the beverages!  Many thanks to the unofficial/official tournament cooking team of Bud Abbott and Mike KaletĂƒÆ’Ă‚Â¢ĂƒÂ¢Ă¢â‚¬Å¡Ă‚Â¬Ăƒâ€Ă‚¦please thank them the next time you see them!

At the end of the day the following results took center stage after a great day of fishing:

The first National Park, Yellowstone, was proclaimed a national park in 1872. However, there was no National Park Service until 1916. Until then, the parks were administered by the U.S. Army. When the Park Service was formed they got their first uniforms from the Army, hence the ranger (campaign) hats.
