On Saturday May the 16 2009 I had the privilege of taking Sonny Moss from Denver NC, Joby Garham from Columbia SC, Larry Graham from Springfield MO ,Larry Hilereth from Mooresville NC on a 3/4 day venture in search of King Mackerel . The sea was Bump so we headed out about 15 miles to start the day. When we got there we put the lines out and trolled around for about 30mins and no hits so we picked the lines and moved to 30 miles out. The water temperature was 70 out there. Upon arrival at the Ledge we marked good Bait. We were immediately rewarded with a King Mackerel about 15 lbs. For the next couple of hours we caught several nice Kings and Spanish Mackerel. We got our limit in King Mackerel (15 of them) and a few Spanish Mackerel troll Pirate Plugs ( from Capt Bob of South Chatham Tackle) with cigar minnow on them. All in all a awesome day of fishing on the Stand ‘N Down II out of Holden Beach North Carolina! _________________ Captain Keith

NO its Pirate Plugs from Capt Bob (South Chatham Tackle)
http://www.southchathamtackle.com/Pirate_Plugs.htm
The Pirate Plug is a unique trolling lure that can turn a bad day of fishing into a great day. The Pirate Plug can be trolled with a ballyhoo or a cigar minnow. The weighted sloped head keeps the bait running straight and always diving down. This lure can make an amateur bait rigger look like a pro. When used with our rigging style your bait will not spin and it will track straight with a vigorous swimming action.
The Pirate Plug can be pulled at speeds from 1 knot to 9 knots with great results. King Mackerel, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, Barracuda, and Amber Jack are just a few of the fish that will inhale this lure. The lure can be run in the prop wash, on a downrigger, a short outrigger, or a long outrigger. My personal favorite way to fish it is on an outrigger. As the boat rocks side to side the lure will be jigged up and down triggering savage strikes. Make sure you have several when heading out and make sure to check the drag setting on your reels because you will need it. _________________ Captain Keith

Great report , not just because you are using my lures, but you are catching Kings and that comes first with me .
The Pirate plug also catches Mahi I usually have one out even when slow trolling live bait, I keep one on the out rigger and the Mahi will hit it before a live bait. _________________

Not to hijack thread but Bob what's the largest fish you know of on a Pirate Plug? I use the deep 6 in the gulf for wahoo and, mahi with luck. Any man in the Blue suit had their picture taken with a PP? _________________ Making Progress

My personal best on a Pirate Plug is a 60lb Wahoo, and a 27lb Mahi. Last year there were several 70 and 80lb Wahoo caught by others on Pirate plugs. There were also several Sail fish caught and released I know of a Blue Marlin being caught on one in Costa Rica.
On the Deep Six my personal best is several 300+lb Blue fin Tuna and several 50/60lb Yellow fin tuna and numerous Wahoo in the 30/40lb range.
As for Marlin I have been trying to figure out how to rig one with a circle hook, sounds like a job for Capt John hint hint . I am open to suggestions if anybody has any. _________________
