Fishermen to march on Washington
Recreational and commercial fishermen, support business owners, families, and community leaders will gather at the steps of our nation’s Capitol on Feb. 17, 2010, from noon to 3 p.m. to show Congress a united front against the unintended impacts of the Magnuson Stevens Conservation and Management Act.
Be there to support real science-based management and the conservation of our marine resources as well as the sustainability of recreational and commercial fishing activities. Details TBA |

I copied and pasted this story from Gloucestertimes.com the author mentions the Feb. 17, 2010 march by fisherman to Washington.
Congressman sets date for Magnuson caucus
By Richard Gaines
Staff Writer
Congressman Barney Frank has tentatively scheduled a caucus of East Coast lawmakers for next Thursday to discuss the challenge of modifying the Magnuson-Stevens Act, the primary federal law governing America's fisheries.
Frank told the Times last week he planned to make a push to bring flexibility into the act in light of decisions by the New England Fishery Management Council to reduce scalloping effort despite the health of the fishery.
"We have a reasonable chance, not quite 50-50," said Frank.
The caucus would be closed to the public, while the participants consider strategies. It could be postponed if Congress recesses beforehand.
Frank said the effort was justified because of the unrequired harm being done to the fishing communities along the Atlantic coast by regulators who misinterpret the legal principle imbedded in the Magnuson-Stevens Act to balance ecological with economic and sociological interests.
"We're reaching out to everyone," said Bruno Freitas, Frank's chief of staff. He said U.S. Sen. John Kerry and Congressman John Tierney, who represents Gloucester, "are on board."
Frank is one of about two dozen congressmen and senators who have signed on to the Flexibility in Rebuilding American Fisheries Act, filed in the U.S. House by Congressman Frank Pallone of New Jersey. The Senate version was filed by Charles Schumer of New York.
Environmental lobbies have organized to prevent any change to Magnuson which mandates catch limits and the creation of rebuilding plans for having overfished species recovered by 2014.
In a related development, the Alabama-based Conservation Cooperative of Gulf Fishermen announced a national demonstration of recreational and commercial fishermen and their families for the steps of the Capitol on Feb. 17 to protest the impact Magnuson has had on fishing communities.
The demonstration is sponsored by a number of organizations.
"The overly restrictive management requirements created by the RMSA based on nonscientific arbitrary deadlines are forcing anglers off the water, eliminating commercial fishing, preventing consumers from purchasing locally caught fresh seafood, destroying small family businesses, increasing unemployment, and adversely affecting coastal communities," said Bob Zales of the Cooperative of Gulf fishermen.
He said details of the march will be announced.
Richard Gaines can be reached at 978-283-7000, x3464, or via e-mail at rgaines@gloucestertimes.com. _________________ David Tedder

We need to get together and do this !!!!!!!!!!! I'll bring it up at the Jan. meeting of the Onslow Bay Saltwater Fishing Club.
Now who wants to head this up and get the ball moving?? Maybe we could go as a group from NC.
Captain Stanman, Captain Dave maybe the two of you could co-ordinate a join effort? _________________ \"A Bad Day Fishing Beats a Good Day At Work\" |

An email from a Mainiac.
Hello Stanman J.,
My name is Amanda Odlin from Maine. We are working with CCGF out of Florida (they are organizing the protest). Bob Zales is in charge of this group. He did a great Flotilla rally one week after ours in Gloucester, Ma. I believe it was assessed at over 10,000 people between land and water (250 miles of coast). He is definitely dedicated. We have aligned ourselves since Oct. I am also working on the Agriculture end of support. Hope you can make it and please spread the word far & wide.
Thanks,
amanda

Mrs Gaines is helping Richard with a big article--this is your chance to give your opinion--she is especially interested in hearing from our southern friends (Bob Z., NC and Gulf guys, Stan J., Elizabeth in CA & Andrea in AL)--on catch shares. I'll be sending mine after this. Read below and respond asap please--they are trying to help us so let's help them help us.

Subject: for GDT fishing project
Amanda,
I (Richard Gaines' wife) am helping him on a big project for the paper.
I would love some comments, (we're doing a round-up of sorts), from any of your far flung correspondents -- esp NY or south, plus you, in reference to catch shares, or whatever else they feel is troubling them. Need something like a letter to the editor, but VERY SHORT! 25 words or less, a snippet in their own words. (hope they don't all sound alike!)
Deadline is Thursday, 12/17/09. Can you send out an SOS?
Have them email to me RNGaines@aol.com Include name (also indicate whether they are a fisherman, scientist or interested observer, whatever), also please include your city and state.
THANKS! Nancy Gaines
Please feel free to email Mrs. Nancy Gaines before 12/17/09 at RNGaines@aol.com
Thanks. _________________ www.captainstanman.us 1st 2005 SKA 23 Class, 2nd 2008, 14th 2009, 15th 2003, SKA Sportsman 2004. 2002 U. S. Anglers 23 Champ. 36 day 1 46 day 2 (82 lbs).SKA Atlantic 23 Class record 2 day Agg.-82.38-2005, 42.47-39.91. Onslow Bay KMT Dir., $212,484-11 yrs |

Captain Dave..............
If it would help in making your point as to the "fatality flawed" (per the councils own admission) stock assessment program, I have no problem with you using the data results that I have sent you in an attached email a couple of weeks ago on the fisheries diversity index.
Bottom line boys and girls, for the last 14 months, I have completed a supplemental stock assessment on gag and scamp grouper by underwater stationary video recordings, that show our grouper stock is 14 - 18 times larger than they anticipated.
Hired statisticians and PHD Biologists to review the data and make their own interpretations. What better way then to record it. The great state of NC actually helped in the funding!!!!!!!!!
We have sent the finding to NC state along with requesting the opportunity to present the findings to the S. Atlantic council............ Don't know if they will want a presentation or not.......
We also did a basic index of all the other fish that were caught on film. Top species were b-liners, aj's, trigger, hogfish, scamp, gag, porgies, black bass, etc.
As a matter of fact, I am in the middle of writing a "less technical" version that if Dave allows, I will post up for all the members to see when I am finished.
If we would have done the study from a boat, we would have had to catch 14,000 lbs of grouper to get the same "weight / age / size" estimates that we got on film. That is alot of breeding grouper still swimming around undisturbed.
Best available data just got BETTER.......... _________________ Craig

| Killer and Griller, would love to take a look at the "less technical" info gathered along with the video footage if possible. Thanks. Hope your info gathering missions will make a difference on the decisions made in the future. |

| I would love to go but i wont be able to know for sure until it get closer. It pisses me off when the government starts regulating something without getting correct data and publics opinion of the matter. Good luck guys im sure 2010 is going to be a tough year for professional fishermen. |

Captain Dave...........Tried to upload but it is a PDF over 1 meg.
If you will send me your email again, I will send you the final technical draft along with a preface to post with it in a thread........ if you can post a PDF. Otherwise, we need to figure out how to post it on the web somewhere that guys can see it in all the color, pictures and charts, not just the text......
For any of you computer guru's........ 1.8 meg Adobe file......
Thanks

^^ now that's a good idea... remember during the farm strike people drove their tractors up there. Able bodies towing their boats would make a nice impression.
We have a wedding in NC in Feb, if we go sit thru that we'll only be 4 hours from DC. Take back our fishing! _________________ *If u r fishing with me...theres NO BITCHIN, JUST FISHIN!*
