Tips on anchoring a boat? My 30ft cruiser has an anchor on a windlass. roughly 20ft of chain and then 150ft of rope. I also have a depth finder to give me a read of depth. My windlass DOES NOT have freefall. Therefore how do I know when the anchor has hit the bottom? In other words how much rope for the depth that I'm at?

Not an easy reply but:
A good bit of chain (like you have) makes your life easier.
The real answer depends on the depth, the bottom, type of anchor, weight and draft of the boat, and wind/current.
Routine masonboro island sand bottom and 5-10 feet under you, 50-60 ft of rode will prob hold you.

If you're anchoring in deeper water, you'll need a little more line.
The Chapman's says 6' for every ft of depth, 9 ft in rough conditions. If I'm overnighting and would like to sleep, I lean on the 6:1 rule.

Anchoring into structure you can sometimes get away with 2:1, even less if you have a diver place the Anchor for you! Smile

Hmmm....wonder if the same theory applies to lake/freshwater anchoring???? I have terrible luck getting my anchor to hold, even in our private lake.....especially when it's busy on the weekends!! Sounds like I need a longer rode and some chain.

Chain definetly you have to have the chain to get it down i don't use the 6;1 rule though I have anchored in 35 ft of rough water with like 100 ft of rope. Just drop it and let plenty of slack while easing in reverse for a second. then pull rope fast and semi tight let slack repeat several times then secure to cleat it should be anchored fine. as lon as you have the proper size anchor same applies in fresh water. this wrks for me.
