Took out 2 boats and 7 people to sheepshead rock on sat. did some skindiving and took a couple pole spears with us. we got 1 sheeps head 12"long. prob 2lbs at most. i was wondering if any one knew of any spots in the wilmington coastal area that were good for this.

John's creek off masonboro island is another fairly good area for polespearing fish. Jetty at masonbor inlet is also fun on high close to slack tides.

About how deep is sheepshead rock? I was looking at going there soon and just snorkeling around just to see what's up around there. Trying to get used to some new fins

Thanks!

Sheepshead shoals up to about 10' in one area.

If the vis is good you can see the bottom in 20-25 feet of water. Sometimes you can't even see the bottom in 10'

As far as other places that are good, depends how deep you can free dive. Liberty ship is only 40' to the deck and 60' to the sand.

I'm pretty comfortable at 50 feet. More comfortable at 40. I just want to find some spots to get more comfortable with freediving in general. I just got into it this fall and took a class. I'll probably eventually just want to be able to spearfish at the most 70 to 75 feet and have more than 2 sec. of bottom time.

Thanks for the info!

Why don't you just Scuba, then you can go deeper for bigger fish and stay down for minutes instead of seconds.

Freediving/spearing is more comparable to fishing with ultralight tackle, its the challenge that most are looking for. If you honestly look at how long a freediver spends in the water covering the entire water column, there will usually be more time to spear and sight-see than a couple tanks dive for scuba. This give a freediver a much better chance at many pelagics that are in the middle depths. Each type of diving is polular for a reason, each appeals to certain people for their own reasons.
