Man what a great day! I can tell you now I'm gonna ramble so just bear with me. A long time ago I bought a 12' single wide to pond fish out of. I used a trolling motor and battery at Lake Tuscorora to pass many a day of fishing. In 2004 I bought a bay boat and that jon boat has been hanging up ever since. My son, now 12, asked about that boat a while back. He is my go to guy on the water. I love his mom to death, but she's not much help driving the boat while I pull the anchor or throw the cast net......
I decide to find an outboard for the jon boat and teach my son how to run it, but outboards are expensive--even the little ones! One of my very good friends and I are discussing this a while back and he says, "You know, I have a little Tomos Traveler that I will never use. I don't know if it even runs, but you can have it." Being the man that I am I said thanks and declined-- you can't just take your buddies motor-- he may have a use for it 10 yrs from now.
About a week ago this motor shows up at my desk, no note no nothing. I took this thing home and my son is ecstatic!! I go around and buy a gas can, hose, fuel fittings, etc- about $50 worth of stuff. Tonight me and that boy drilled out the motor housing for the new fuel fitting, vacuumed the bugs out and got ready to see if it would fire. Oh yeah, at the gas station we're talking about the right fuel mixture for 2 gallons of gas. He whips out a formula and tell me we need 5.5oz of oil mix for a 50:1 ratio.
Motor fires on the 6th pull or so!!!!! The boy is going nuts, starts saying he's got to learn to back a trailer and what not. After a bit this thing is purring. We did discover that the shear pin was sheared, put it came right out. We'll take care of that tomorrow. Next good day we're gonna put in and putt close to the ramp-just to chek her out.
Thanks for letting me ramble......I'd like to see Nintendo or X-box put this in a game !. _________________ See Ya On The Water

When I was 14 My pop gave me his old jon boat and a sears Elgin outboard, But before he would allow me to use it he made me take a Coast Guard safe boating course. At the time I didn't understand why he was doing it, but over the years have thanked him for making me do it.
Teach him to use it correctly and he will enjoy it for many many years to come. _________________ \"A Bad Day Fishing Beats a Good Day At Work\"

My dad bought my my 1st boat when I was around 14. The boat had more holes then I knew what to do with. He got me an 8hp that the neighbor sold to us for a steal of a price. After a couple of months of patching up holes, I got fed up, and decided to sell it. Bought my 10' pelican pontoon boat 2 years ago, and here I am now with an 09 14' jonboat with an 09 9.8hp. Once youre hooked as a kid, youll never give it up. Good luck with the boat, and your son will love every second being on it, trust me. _________________ 2009 14\' Voyager Jonboat

I started out in a 12' single wide john boat with my dad when I was around 7 or 8. Back then all I wanted to do was fish, and now 23 years later not much has changed. It all started with dad and I still make a point to get on his bass boat and fish with him several times a year.
Now I have a 7 yr old of my own and we fish in a 12' grumman doublewide. _________________ TOTAL CHAOS
