Took a ride today from the ICWW towards the inlet about mid-tide in Old Topsail Creek.
The creek is in ok shape and the big right turn towards Banks Channel in the creek had about 4 feet of water.
The dredge is working at the entrance to Banks channel and in front of him towards the inlet at mid tide there is nothing but sand. There is no water at all and no entrance from the creek to the back bay. There were some smaller boats cutting close to the back side of the beach inside from the inlet to get to the back bay, but unless you draft about 1 foot at mid tide, it would not be recommended.
The dredge Wilco captain said he hoped to have Banks Channel open in the next 2-3 days if the work continued well. He said he had dredged about 1,000 feet so far. He has to work the shallow area of the creek that was described above and then work towards the inlet.
The dredge Merritt is due to work the bar the 8th of May.
Let's hope they make great progress and the inlet becomes passable soon.
Tight lines and be safe.

Ed,

Talked to a good friend who is doing the dredging and surveying work at Topsail. He said the outside bar is in good shape, he said it was in bad shape but since Irene it has been getting batter and back to normal. He said around 6ft at low tide lately. He said once you make the last turn from the Topsail beach the channel is making a southernly track slighty. He said it was easy to see. I am going to go check it out this week sometime, but he has been out there for a while now so he should know better than most.

Kevin,
I am sure you know, but all the buoys are gone, so one must be careful or have some saved tracks. The last time I ran the inlet was in the fall and when you turn to port and head to the south end of the beach the water was pretty skinny. The bar was in pretty bad shape in the late fall and glad it is getting better. Just hope they dredge the natural cut and do not try to make a new one.

The latest survey can be overlaid with Google Earth. On the Army Corps site there is a new file (kmz) that opens the survey in Google Earth. I plotted a centerline and downloaded the waypoints to make a route. I was told by Roger Bullock, the head of Navigation, the Wilco must finish on the inside before the Merritt can go through the bar.

Ed you are right and they told me they would dredge out that skinny part and would be stopping where you make that last turn from South Topsail beach to head to the bar. They are going to leave the bar to the army corp eng., but since they are pumping it onto the beach instead of sidecasting hopefully it will last much longer.

thanks for the report on last trip KPORT

Kport,
Great news on the bar. I heard recently that the bar was a mess with white water all the way across. Glad to hear it is passable now.
Until the Wilco gets done, I think I am running north to New River and chase bonito if they make a showing.
Just hope someone turns off the fan. Onslow buoy this morning is gusting to 20 knots!!
