We had our annual charity charter for the Diabetes foundation onboard. Plan was to head out to the Trawler bouy and put in for BFT and make our way to the kings. Slick a$$ calm and if they didn't cooperate then we would drop for some grouper. What a beautiful day. Had 2 pretty spanish rigged and a couple horses. I know there are a few BFT's around but I thought our odds were very slim. I went through the drill with the guys of what to do when we get one on. None of them had much experience in offshore fishing but were very eager to learn and ask questions. Got the spread out as the sun was coming up, beautiful sunrise. I was spining yarns about last year, offshore, BFT and YFT. Like I said I really didn't expect much. I told the crew, watch this, I dropped the lever on the 130 and give her a good rip, and the clicker screamed. Shane about fell out of his chair spinning around. He always does this to me. Sneaks down off the bridge, waits till I am pissing off the stern and lets one rip. So I go thim today! We weren't 1/2 hour into the troll when the lt long pops from the clip and the 130 starts to rev from a slow grind to a scream. I slam it home and it's pulling 43lbs like it is cool. Everyone grabbed a reel and cleared the mess without a minute to spare, about 75 yds left on the reel. Outstanding job. I asked if they wanted to fight the fish in the chair or where it was, in the arm rest of the chair. After a few cranks on the reel they opted to fight it where it was. They each got a few turns cranking and were glad they fought it there. Within 20 minutes we had her to the boat. The fish never went deep or made a second run. We got her under control and brought her in the boat. She was 78 inches and dressed out at a mere 190 but she went to market. High 5's all around and a very happy crew. They got some video on thier palm pilot that turned out great. Will be waiting for that and post it up. After a very slow start last year and a strong finish I am wondering what our luck is going to be like this year. But I will be out there every day I can, because..................
God I love this job!!!!!!! _________________ Capt Rick Evans
