How do you protecting yourself from bull sharks while wading? Also question about kayak fishing safety.? Before anyone suggests packing a firearm ; That is not an option. But if you were wading with , say a fishing trident or something similar , could you defend yourself? Also , how far from the surf can I get with a sturdy fishing Kayak w/o fear of a shark tipping me over? this would be in calm bay waters.

uhhh dont stab anything while wading it will only cause blood enticing more critters to come to you.
Dont drag a stringer full of dead bleeding fish with you, you are only chumming the waters around you.
The only way I could imagine you actually protecting yourself is to pray Laughing ,
my father in law and I have actually hit a few sharks with our rod butts off the south end of topsail surf fishing or wading for trout.

I wouldnt worry about getting dumped by a shark on a kayak, no great whites out here on the beach like other places. So you can go as far as you feel comfortable paddling out and back

Just one of those things you have to know the risk and say I'm gonna do it or i'm not. We dont have alot of shark attacks around here, especially by guys that are fishing.

So dont sweat it go fishing.

I've been out to Cape Lookout from Harkers and back and have been out as far as a couple of miles off the beach.
Have seen some pretty good sharks, caught more smaller ones than I cared to.

If you hook into one that bigger than you want to handle, cut it loose.

It isn't as easy to tip a kayak as a lot of people think, especially if you are sitting in it. You are more likely to get dumped coming back in through the surf.

I wouldn't worry about sharks while you are in a kayak. They like swimmers and surfers better.

I haven't taken my kayak off shore yet, but saw a fuy fishing at the AR off Carolina Beach this summer. He paddled in from the surf. Flat day. A couple of years ago I was hoping to go out Masonboro and decided not to do so on a 19ft outboard, looked out and saw a couple of kayaks fishing out past end of jetty. A kayak tournament was going on. I would not have gone out that day on a Kayak or any smaller boat.

Ive fished the shoals at capt hatteras several times and have seen some pretty big sharks mostly sand tigers. I have also seen several big hammerheads as well. Most of the time they arent going to bother you unless you have alot of fish behind you. I have only one time been in a position where i have actually been hit and the bonito were every where. The sharks were literally chasin the paddle, but all in all they are as scared of you as you are of them GOOD LUCk
