I am looking for a good place to try snorkeling, hopeing to maybe spear something. No boat so it has to be accessable from land. I was thinking maybe the wall/jetty at Writesville beach? Anyone had any luck there in the past, maybe somewhere better???
Thanks for the help. |

The Jetty is the best and only real place to do this around WB without a boat. May be some flounder on the bottom this time of year and sheepshead hugging the rocks. Its been rough for a while so the vis is terrible I'm sure. Be very cautious of tide and surge. Only dive at slack high and get out of there before it starts to fall and watch out for boat traffic. I would recommend a higly visible float and a dive buddy. _________________ 26' cc Southport

| What Hogwild said. You can get swept over the wall just before the rocks pretty easily if the tide is moving, and there is heavy boat traffic so stay as close as you can to the rocks and have a float with a dive flag. But you really have to wait til things settle down and you get some visibility, now would be terrible, but you dont know til ya go |

I haven't done a ton of snorkeling, but I messed around this summer a bit and saw some nice fish in Mason's Inlet (north end of Shell Island). During slack high tide one day the water looked like the Bahamas and it was easy to spot fish just 8 feet below me. If it is a nice day that's a beautiful spot and there is not much boat traffic right at the mouth of the inlet because it is generally considered to be non-navigable, except for jon boats and an occasional loony bin who opens it up and just goes for it... _________________ Sailfish 30-06 Express, twin Yamaha 250's |

| There was a tall blonde south african in my Brazilian jiu-jitsu class named Simba. Probably about 20 years old and strong as an ox. We surfed together, but he never mentioned spearing. Assuming it's the same person, I wish I would have known at the time as he no longer attends class. Could have gained some valuable knowledge. |
