I know there is money for Carolina Beach Inlet. I have NOT heard anything about the rest except Bogue. I don't think there was money for Bogue...they just got a MAJOR dredging project.
I will ask around!

Carolina Beach got 495,000 this past tuesday. So CB is good to go. I have not heard about the rest. IF you hear something let us know.

Maybe the hurricanes that struck Louisiana and Texas weren’t bad for coastal North Carolina after all. After initially worrying that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita could wash away funding for local waterway projects, officials find that beaches and inlets in Southeastern North Carolina appear to have capitalized from Congress’ rush to rebuild the Gulf Coast. “Even up until last Friday, we thought it was going to hurt the rest of the country,†said Paul Ordal, vice president of Marlowe & Co., a Washington-based lobbyist that many North Carolina coastal communities work with. “But for some reason they decided the (Army Corps of Engineers’) civil works program needed to be funded across the country, so I did think it helped in bringing renewed attention to other parts of the country.†U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre, D-N.C., agreed. “If there was a silver lining to the damage from the devastating hurricanes that we suffered, it’s that my colleagues finally listened,†he said in an interview from Washington on Tuesday. Faced with opposition from the White House, rising costs associated with the war in Iraq and a sputtering economy, officials had long feared the worst for local waterway and beach projects. The House funding proposal, which included sharp reductions for many local waterway projects, heightened that concern this summer. But the Senate bill in August reinstated much of the money. Then Katrina and Rita slammed into the Gulf Coast, causing massive damage and leaving huge repair bills. Considering all of the hurdles, local officials said they were pleased with the funding compromises reached Monday night. Caswell Beach Mayor Harry Simmons is executive director of the N.C. Beach, Waterway and Inlet Association. He said he was especially pleased to see federal funding secured for the region’s shallow-draft inlets, which President Bush had wanted to end. “It wasn’t a home run this year, but, by golly, it wasn’t terrible either,†he said. “We should be pleased with what we got.†But navigating the Intracoastal Waterway could get increasingly sketchy as Congress continued its practice of dramatically underfunding the maintenance requirements for the waterway. The corps has said it needs about $7 million to maintain the waterway at current levels and $11 million to make much-needed improvements. Washington has authorized $1.39 million. Even so, Mr. McIntyre said the small amount represented a victory. “When you start with absolutely zero, as the White House had proposed, we are very grateful to have achieved the funding that we did,†he said. Funding holes remain. They include no money for the dredging of Bogue Inlet in Carteret County and shortfalls for Wrightsville Beach’s beach renourishment project and studies in Brunswick County and Topsail Island. But officials will get another chance to secure funding for the projects that didn’t receive all the money they were looking for. Officials hope to include funding in a supplemental spending bill that primarily is intended help pay for damage caused by Katrina and Rita, as well as Ophelia-related losses. Mr. McIntyre said he also saw Congress’ renewed focus on coastal projects helping the region down the road. “We want to ride the crest of that wave of favorable momentum forward as a launching pad for future battles,†he said.
Beach, inlet projects to receive federal funding

WASHINGTON , DC – Topsail Island beach nourishment and inlet projects will get some funding from the federal government thanks to a US House-Senate Conference report for the 2006 Energy and Water Bill. The Bill is expected to be approved by the US House this week. Federal funding for the Topsail area includes $1,389,000 for Intracoastal Waterway dredging, $608,000 for New Topsail Inlet dredging, $600,000 for the beach nourishment project for Topsail Beach and $175,000 for the joint beach nourishment project for Surf City and North Topsail Beach. Local shore protection advocates had hoped that the federal government would help finance beach nourishment and inlet dredging but have been looking for alternate sources of funding. “In my wildest dreams I did not think Topsail Beach would get the full $600,000,†said Topsail Beach Shoreline Protection Advisory Committee Chairman Steve Walter. The US Army Corps of Engineers had asked for $600,000 for the Topsail Beach project, explained Walter, but in early congressional budgets the project had not been slated to receive any federal funding. Walter said that with the money the town will be able to move ahead on its beach nourishment project. “We need to be able to get as much done this year as possible,†said Walter. If all goes perfectly as planned, with no storms, financial problems or other snags, Topsail Beach could begin seeing its beach nourished by fall of 2009 or 2010, Walter predicted. “This funding really helps,†said Walter. US Representative Mike McIntyre has pushed to obtain federal funding for beach, inlet and waterway projects. He said he was pleased with the funding. “In this time of deficit concerns, this is indeed great news for our coastal region. Our beaches, waterway, and inlets are treasures that contribute much to our economy, environment, and infrastructure protection. These funds will help these projects move forward, and I am very appreciative of the bi-partisan effort with Senators Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr to secure these dollars,†Congressman McIntyre stated. |

To the best of my knowledge, NC State law prohibits hardened reenforcement of the coast lines. A jetty is Illegal by this NC law.
