Anyone have any home-made "inventions" for storing downrigger balls when not in use..? _________________ *SECOND WIND*

PVC to the rescue. 3 or 4 inch PVC cap with a slot cut for the tail fin which holds your balls up straight. Option 2; the 3 " thick solid foam notched out or torched out for it to lay in like a birds nest.

In the cooler with ice works great . we have a cooler at the back of the boat and let out a little line on the downrigger and put both balls in the cooler (they are usally blue when we take them out )

Rodhog has the right idea. Just cut a piece of pvc pipe off and slot it and your good to go. _________________ Tommy Stewart

| I do not. Put the ball portion in the appropriate size cap and slot it so the rear fin portion sticks through, therefore it sits in the cap upright and the slot prevents it from falling over. |

I have a picture of our setup very very similar to RodHog's idea.
I will get it posted as soon as we get our computers going again - BOTH crashed & will not even restart. _________________ *SECOND WIND*

Sorry, my 'puter is back at Day 1 so I have fresh pictures taken about 20 minutes ago..
This is a piece of PVC (3" to 2" Reducer to be exact, lol), cemented to the back of the boat, cut on its side so the ball tail & ball will fit flush inside of it... hole drilled in the bottom to allow water to drain out. No rattle, no bounce, out of the way, perfect solution.
Or you can spend $15 and go buy the black ones - dunno how sturdy or thick they are..??
I like what we got though. Thanks for the idea starter RodHog. _________________ *SECOND WIND*

I up-graded to a big Kitty Litter Jug, I will hold all the 12-16-20 oz weights plus the downrigger balls. The cooler works well also.
I like the PVC idea Amanda, but I dont think I would want it mounted to the boat. _________________ Ricky Holden

i dont think the attaching to the boat would be safe with the guys i fish with, they might just trip and fall overboard. _________________ Robby

| I know this is a older post, but I was looking through them and saw this. I use a 5.56 ammo box from any army surplus store usually cheap. an 8lb ball will fit in there and wont roll around to much just paint the box every couple years to hold the rust down. |

I use a hose clamp and a S hook and clamp it to the tube portion of the down rigger when you bring up your ball and need it out of the way just put the ball on the S hook through where the snap swivel conacts to the ball and it will hang there until your done.
Works very well use to just drop in the bottom of the boat but after it landed on my foot a couple times I tried this and it works great. _________________ <*)))))))))))>{ |

I stuff the ball inside a thick foam coozie, it might not fit perfect but they stretch. It gives some padding so it wont ding the gelcoat.....a ghetto method but heck them things are just about free and it works.

I always put mine sitting on top of a roll of duck tape. I kept several on hand. They also make GREAT can holders on the dash.

I have been using a medium "dog dish" for years. The kind that the dog can't tip over... real cheap and the ball stays put every time. Get one that fits the ball. Easy to store when not in use. _________________ Capt. Greybeard

| I always use Laundry detergent bottles, cut the front out and leave the handle intact. Works good for sinkers too. There a little thicker than milk jugs. |

We use one of those little carriers for two liters of soda like the pepsi man or grocery store uses. We cut one half and it sits in front storage box of boat. I think cut in half it holds six balls. _________________ Last Minute Fishing Team
