Team Native wins SKA Pro in Key West
KC.com STAFF

Teams fishing the SKA Pro tour expected to find big fish when they traveled down to Key West. While several teams found those big smoker mackerel, every team on the tour found big weather. Four to six foot sea conditions made it difficult for many teams to not only travel between spots, but to even fish once at their desired location. Team Native, captained by Robert Snibbe, brazed these conditions and won the first professional event of the year with an aggregate total of 88.91 pounds. Led by their day two 57 pound king mackerel, team Native earned a check for $40,000 and an early lead in the race for the 2008 SKA Angler of the Year!

The Native team made the 7 hour trek down to Key West, from Tampa, four days early. The goal was to procure a good quantity of bait, locate a group of kingfish, and get all of this information before the sea conditions became unpleasant. “We spent the weekend at Fort Jefferson,” said Snibbe. “We camped out there and prefished a lot. We were able to locate some fish, and used the information that we gathered during the tournament.”

Snibbe and the team caught both of their fish at a spot about 50 miles away from the weigh in. “We were able to run the lakes, so it wasn’t too rough, for most of it. Fishing that same spot both days paid off for us.” Snibbe and his crew decided to fish this area because it is a historic haunt for big fish and they were able to mark a plethora of huge bait pods on their bottom sounder.

The baits of choice this weekend were large blue runners. According to Snibbe both of the big fish came off of big blue runners. On day 1 the team also caught every fish on downrigger baits. The day 1 fish, a 32 pounder, was caught on a downrigger bait down 60 feet in the water.

“Unfortunately, after a day 1 fish under 35 pounds we knew that it would be tough to win. We thought we were out of it. But we knew that we had to give it a go on day 2, just in case something great happened.” That great thing did happen on day 2.

Fishing the same spot as they did on day 1, team Native’s luck turned at around 11 o’clock. “At about 11 o’clock the 57 pounder ate a blue runner in the prop wash and Jerry Solovskoy grabbed the rod. 15 minutes later, the monster mackerel was subdued and gaffed.” Snibbe and the whole crew new that they were thrusted back into the tournament. “When that fish hit the deck, we knew we had a great shot to place well. We decided to head in early and see how we did.”

Winning an event is always a monumental achievement, but this win on the professional tour meant more to the Native team. “It’s awesome to win this event,” said Snibbe. “We have won a couple of local events, like the King of the Beach and the Suncoast Classic, but this is a professional tournament and means so much more. You are competing against some of the best fishermen in the country.” Team Native now has 88.91 points which will go towards their yearlong total, stay tuned, because this team can make a run for the SKA Angler of the Year title.
