We were going to fish the Big Rock out of Hatteras, but the boat did not make the trip from Wanchese to Hatteras.
The boat (Water Witch) sank in less then 5 minutes. Here is a couple of pics of the boat. I was not the captian or on the boat when it sank

The captain was the only person on the boat and he was fine. _________________ www.anglersedgemarine.com

I am sure it would if you hit it hard enough.... _________________

| I am not sure, but I believe that setup is sort of "direct drive" meaning when its in gear, its in gear. That being said if you have a boat that big grounded and the prop runs up on something big it would seem like the bottom of the boat might be the softest things around when it came time for something to "give" :par: |

..Just guessing from the size of that metal hanging out I'd say yer right.. The 'glass would be the weakest structure in the area..
..Almost makes me wanna re-think this thing with the inboards.. d:^) Schneeky.. |

I've heard of more than one boat sinking because of the outdrive seal or boot going bad. _________________ Tommy Stewart

looks like the hit was substantial enough pull the the shaft in an aftward motion with enough force to actually rupture the gearcase. I can't imagine exactly how that could happen, usually the coupling or somthing else lets go. I see the coupling and what appears to be a dripless shaft seal, but no shaft alley (usually a fiberglass tube) remnants.....seems strange, like the shaft was more or less plucked out of the back of the boat. usually the blades on the wheel fail, then maybe the coupling....I dunno fellas, seems Odd. anybody know where the boat is at present, I'd imagine wanchese.....could also be scotts in ...I'd love to take a look.

| The #s are not missing it is a documented vessel which requires you to have the name on the side instead of #s. |

I don't know, but I think that is an engine mount coming thru the hull. It is in front of the dripless, and the bellhousing of the transmission. It also looks like a rubber mount. The hull looks very thin there. I know of a 61 Davis sportfish that hit a hard sand bar on plain and drove the engine mount & strut thru the deck. Usually the shaft pulls out from the tranny connection. The Davis was fairly new and the hull was over 2" thick at that point. Good thing (for the captain) the owner was driving at the time. They say they hit a kedge, Robbs marina said they hit a hard bar.

| maybe a steal anchore line? caught in the prop, if at speed maybe , the guys are right alot of rear pull there hard to think something was hit unless he was going fast enough to go completely over it and then get caught on shaft. |
