April is an exciting to fish inshore because it marks the coming of the summer. Like in anytime of year, finding the right water temperature is crucial. Water temps are warmer on the ebb tide and are warmest the further inshore you go. The dark mud and shallow waters in the salt marsh peak in temperature during the last couple hours of ebbing. In fact, I have noted water temperatures fluctuate six degrees during the tide change.
Inshore fishing this month has been consistent, despite an early freeze. High winds have been more of a factor. The strong offshore winds funnel right down the ICW and stir up inshore waters. Despite the winds, I have had consistent catches of 14â€-16†bluefish, small whiting, sand perch, and spots on fresh shrimp and cut mullet. Hand-sized Spots are in big numbers this month. The majority of the fish I am catching are fish that have wintered in the channels and deep holes inshore and are now moving into the shallows to feed. Along the LR jetties I am catching rays on cut bait, and jigging Gulps for 10â€-12†Black Sea Bass.
The coming weeks should see water temperatures stabilizing in the upper 60’s and I will focus on drifting live baits for flounder entering the inlet to spawn. The trout bite should be picking up as these fish begin move downriver toward the inlet. The fishing will only getting better from here!
