I am originally from Fla. Plenty of hogfish in south Fla and bahamas - but small compared to the brutes I've seen taken here in Wilmington! They are a very rare catch in Fla on hook and line - usually on shrimp or small crabs.

I see them being caught - even on headboats around here - fairly commonly. Any tricks / secrets? What is a good bait for them?

I caught one this weekend at Topsail on shrimp, the one i caught was about 10 inches long

The one I caught last year hit a WHOLE b-liner. As for spots I think its just luck of fishing a spot where there happens to be a hognose. They arent aggresive because 70% of their diet is coral. I think the only way to really catch bunches of them at once is to dive them. I have never heard of people pulling up hognose back to back like grouper...

They fight like a truck though. Shocked

i remember years ago i was on a headboat in Charleston SC, and by the end of the trip we had 15+ hognose snapper in the boat....if my memory serves me right, all were caught on your standard squid pieces.
