September is a great time for fishing. There lots of bait and temps are beginning to fall. As with past years, this September I've been landing big reds (over 30"). I like the incoming tide along the jetties. (Remember to take the time and resuscitate those big reds, then release. Slot limits are useless if they die after the catch. That DNA is too valuable to lose!
Many times this month I started off for reds and ended up in getting in a spanish mack frenzy. I must say that this is some of the biggest and best spanish fishing I have seen in Myrtle Beach. I am shying away from throwing artificials with treble hooks unless I am using wire liter, so most of the spanish I caught were on live mullet, 30lb flouro, and a small cirlce hook. Also, using a cork adds to the chaos.
Flounder have been consistent this month, too. Other than some days when the water was too dark from all the rain, we have had some major moon phases bringing in and out a lot of water. Flounder love those full moon high tides. This weekend I got on a great flounder bite around Oak Island. I took my daughter on our annual trip up there and while she watched Disney channel in the motel room I landed 4 nice keepers on light tackle and soft plastics. Use a small jig head and sharpen the hook with a file. Slow retrieves bouncing along the bottom. After I feel the intial hit, I count to three, point the rod toward the fish, then set the hook.
