We had our single charter onboard. He arrived from NY at 0300 a little weiry but ready to rock. We let him sleep for a couple hours then off the dock at 0730. The plan was to get a little meat to take home then go look for the bills and swords. Lou Nick and Glenn not too far behind. We got right into the gaffers and had plenty of action for the first couple hours. He really wanted a wahoo but it just wasn't in the cards today. Guess it was around 2:00-3:00 when Lou calls that he just released a white and had a blue zip the spread. Around 3:30 There he is, sneaking up on the left short, then the teaser, drop back, he dissappears then out of nowhere left long to the right short then off to the deep. Damns all around. Check the mess, still OK. At 5:00 I was back straightening the spreader bar and as I look over at the left flat, here he comes with a full head of steam. Chuck is sitting right there, he drops it down the hatch and it is screaming. Shane hollers, TEASER TEASER!!!! I drop it and down the hatch it goes, 2 screamers! The charter is on the other side and both the flat and teaser are ripping. HOLY SH!T! WHAT NOW? I GOT HIM ON THE SHORT BRIDGE POLE, Shane yells. About that time 4 of them decide to weave a basket. I've never seen any thing like it, 4 Whites in the air at the same time 50 yds straight off the stern, not just once NOOOOO, they did this about 3 or 4 times. Up and over down and under. The fish that took the rt flat managed to wrap the spreader bar, the rod the charter was fighting, as I worked my way over to try to unscrew the mess while fighting my fish his leader parted on the bar. Still 4 on, he grabbed the teaser line for a short fight when that pulled free. The 7/0 circle on my line broke right in the throat, Gamcatsu. As quick as it started it was all over with nothing to show for it axcept a memory. One I will never forget.
We headed out to 400 fathoms to settle down for the night. Rigged up some verry pretty squids and chunked them in 1/2 hour before dark. I guess it was about a couple hours when we heard the first Zit Zit. Lock her down and crank like hell, line comes tight and starts screaming. Game on. I am clearing lines and mine is feeling funny, not ripping just heavy. At the boat I see the splash, SH!T a shark 6 ftr, cut the leaderwhile trying to free him. After a few in and outs with the main event I see a white shadow just out of the light, it makes a quick turn back off the stern and keeps going, right through the leader. The wind kicked up to about 25 and the current was pushing us further offshore so we headed back in to be closer to start the troll at first light. The morning was pretty quiet. Saw one Blue air out 500 yds behind the boat and that was about it.
Was a long night, all were glad to be back at the dock and butts were dragging. Was a great trip just don't know how many of them I want to do, kinda takes it out of you. Glen I took care of it with Marty. Lou, Nick and Glen when are we doing this again? It was a pleasure gentlemen. |

| Bob, when we got back to the dock we had heard the long liners got some. Don't know where though. We were in about 800 to 1000 fathoms I believe. |

Bob I was listening to the longliners talk on the radio all night they are here but nobody fishes for them. Think about it if the catch them in Florida & up North in the Canyons why shouldnt they be. btw did you find a mechanic that day you called me I had one for you to try then I had your message you think you had it handled? _________________ Capt. | They started fishing for them off Charleston a few years ago and have had success. I heard that Capt. Brant out of Ocean Isle did a trip last year and caught a smaller swordfish. |
