Do not ride over to another boat that is bottom fishing. This is considered STEALING. That makes you a thief. (Unless theya re sitting on a well known place or wreck...WR4 or the WWI wreck kind of stuff) Other than that....Leave people alone.
If a boat is drifting....never drift in front of a boat already in place. If you wish to join in....Drift behind them. First come fist served more or less.
Never fish on top of another boat....It is a BIG ocean. Move to another spot.
Leave Head Boats, charter boats and Commercial Boats alone.
When trolling....and other boats are in circle...if you wish to join....join the back of the circle. DO NOT RIDE THROUGH WHAT IS INSIDE THE CIRCLE>
I am sure more folks will add to this list.

| Dave, what about a Courtesy DO's and DONT's thread like this one for the DA's who dont know where to begin. I just got through commenting on the cast net thread by Tim while laughing and shaking my head. Seems like some people need instruction. How about one on launching and retrieving you boat! |

Automated radio check on Ch. 28. Do not use Ch. 16 for radio checks.
If you see a boat casting to fish(cobia, bonito, spanish, etc.) do not run through the fish or half throttle by them throwing a huge wake. _________________ Capt. John Mallette

Dont "play" in topsail inlet on jet skis, when the channel is barely wide enough for one boat. _________________ 2009 14\' Voyager Jonboat

Do not announce on an open channel on the radio that I am on a hot bite at the break when no one else is on the fish. Then troll across my bow, thru my spread and sound my fish. _________________ Donnie (Reel Affliction II) |

Don't drive your flat bottom boat 20 mph and then give a mean stare at a guy who passes you in a deep V who has to go 28+ in order to stay on plane. _________________ Sailfish 30-06 Express, twin Yamaha 250's |

Please turn on your vhf and keep it on 16 or at least scan, so when I call you to cuss you out for doing all the above things, at least I will feel better, knowing you are listening _________________ Three Buoys Fishing Team

Shane,
I feel ya....
I got cussed one morning for BACKING around a sailboat that anchored behind my slip...
What really brought this up was last weekend....I had 4-5 boats pull up to me while I was fishing....circle around me hitting their MOB button. If you are one of those 5....YOU ARE A THEIF!
This weekend...I am sitting on a spot drifting....been working it an hour or so....little outboard pulls up to me (Not a super secret spot) ....gets in front of my drift line and starts fishing. Now that would have not have been near as bad....but I go the wheel house....Try to raise him on 18....nope....Try to raise him on 16....nope. Finialy I had to reel up the whole boat and ppull over to him and on the PA say "Excuse me...If your radio was on we would not have to do this.... I have been fishing here a while and I would appreacheat it if you would give me enough room to continue to do so.
There are not many fishermen in NC I have not helped in some way shape or form. Forecasts, Numbers, How to, People, Places things....Something. I am not greedy but I do make my living on the water. I feed my children, I pay my mortage from what I do out there. I have 20 years running around in the ocean looking for the spots I pick to fish on. All I ask is for a little room and a little consideration. Would you even think of picking up my book of numbers and writing them down? How about briging a GPS on my boat and marking the spots? Why would anyone even consider pulling over to a bottom fishing boat and marking what they are fishing on? Go find your own stuff and STOP STEALING from me and my family.
Man I feel better now!

| Dave, some are just too lazy to find their own spots. It's too eazy for them to just mark your's. I was going to a spot yesterday and someone was on it. I went to another spot 1/2 mile south. Started fishing, 30 mins later, us catching nice BSB they came within 50 yards of me anchor towing. Marked spot I was on and went back to other spot they were on. What takes the cake is when I got to dock, they came over and said they were not catching anything and wanted to see what is was on. Funny thing is they were in a Fountain, I guess money can't buy good spots. |

Stealing someone's numbers is a vile and detestable thing. Finding productive spots can take a long time and a lot of fuel. 25 years ago you didn see that happen, now it's common. Ask me and I'll help you find some fish, but steal from me and you'll get a different response. _________________ 2003 19 Proline CC, 115 HP Merc |

| I've got another one for you. Don't pull your 12 year old daughter waterskiing from Barden's Inlet to Harkers Island with a long line of boats behind you. That is a narrow, shallow channel at best and everyone needs to be on plane to make it some times. It would be easy for your kid to fall and get run over before any one had any where to go. I was two boats back watching and cringing the whole time, thinking that the bay boat right behind that little girl was going to hit her at any time. |

A week or so ago we had someone on our go to spot 30-40 miles out. So we move off a mile or so anchor on a small spot in the middle of nowhere and start our work on the bottom. Only one boat a mile away. An hour later we 3-4 boats trolling circles around us. 2-3 anchoring up with us. We kept catching and after 2 hrs they all finally left and we were still wearing out the fish. All you have to do is look at your own bottom machine for any markings. It is not that hard to do. _________________ Southern is a spot in your heart, not a direction.

I am constantly appalled at the lack of consideration I see on the water from every type of boat, every social background or financial status, every geological region of origin......I'll throw in my one. When you come across a man striking flounder on a bank that is long and you want to strike the same bank, please have the consideration to 1) slow down to an idle when passing this man so that he does not have to stop and wait for 15 minutes for the mud to lay back down and the water to clear and 2) go at least 200 yards past him before setting down in front of him to start. I dont claim to own the bank and I know that in places like the ICW there's only two banks to work. But to swamp a man and then set down within shouting distance and work his bank while he has to wait for the mud to clear is a really stress provoking action.
People out there at 3:00 am and are not gigging, I dont expect to slow down for me, even though I do for them, but another person doing what you are doing should know better. _________________ When they kick in your front door

Lots of folks are not inconsiderate (though many are)...they are just plain dumb. They don't know the basic rules of running a boat well enough to even get around to what is courtesy on the water. _________________ Cape Horn 31

While we are on the subject of boating, how many knuckleheads know the difference between stand-on and give-way, and how many know what side to pass on going down the ditch?
It is just mind blowing to watch what people do on the water.
Last week on the way to Topsail Inlet in the creek, I had a 13 ft Whaler make me come to a complete stop from running 25 knots not to hit him as he would not move one inch in the creek and looked at me "like what's the problem". He had no idea he was on my side of the channel with boats coming up behind him, and I had no where to go.
