Wife just called me (I'm at work, she's at home).

She said there's a dead small buck in our back yard. She suspect he was hit by a car and ran into our yard and died, but can't say with certainty because he doesn't look mangled. She said there's a small open wound/sore on one of his legs.

Carnivore Preservation Trust (or what it's currently called) wouldn't take it to feed the big cats because she didn't know how it died.

Who do you call to get rid of one of these things? We live in Chatham county, and have a lot in a subdivision, so it's not like I can move it to a far corner of my yard and forget about it. The place where I take the trash and recycling has a sign up explicitly saying 'no dead animals'.

Anybody know what to do?

wife called DOT. They said they'd come grab it. I'll report back on whether or not they bury it right then and there.

Eric-I'm all for your option if i had enough land to do it, but I don't, and I'm not gonna get shot for trespassing and hauling a carcass onto someone else's property. We've got an outdoor cat, so I don't want anything attracting dogs etc into the yard.

The Chatham County Road Cleaning Crew (aka buzzards) do a quite thorough job though, I'll have to say.

Given the season, how about a red ribbon, some lipstick on the nose, a harness, presto the best looking lawn ornament on the block. At least for a couple days with this weather.

so to rehash...Animal Control told her to drag it to the road, THEN call DOT. (that sounds like them passing the buck to me...pun intended!)

Our neighbor came home before I could get there from work and he hauled it up out of the yard into the driveway, threw it in his truck and said "i'll take care of this for you".

He's got some relatives close and I suspect he'll go dump it on one of their big lots and let nature take its course, which is fine with me.

So the correct answer to 'how do i get rid of...' is have a good neighbor.

Damn, I wondered where the deer I was blood trailing went. Sorry I didn't make a better shot on him. Guess my kids won't eat tonight, maybe I should join occupy crowd instead.
By the way you're cat bit me. He looked hungry.

If you run into the situation again, call NC Wildlife. That would be their jurisdiction and they would send a wildlife officer out to remove it I would think. Not positive, but definitely their jurisdiction.

I had this happen last summer. It started stinking up the whole area. I spread some lime on it and that helped a bit. I called the county (pender) and it was gone the next day.
