Yes we have Florida Horse Conch although we are at the extreme northern edge of there range. These are not the same conch you would normally associate with Bahamas/Jamaica as it is not a true conch in that it is not a member of the Strombus genus. We have tons of whelks.

I've got a buddy that runs what they refer to as conch pots up around the Virginia - Maryland border out of Chincoteague, but what they are catching are actually whelks, like Richard mentioned. From what he told me they sell them to a wholesaler who ships them to Florida where they are ground up and made into "conch" fritters. I understand the taste is very simular, although the whelks are smaller. They catch a smooth whelk and a knobby whelk, one is better than the other and I don't remember which. It's hell getting old. Never had Carolina Conch so I can't attest to the flavor.

So after a 2nd visit....he did tell me that it is whelk meat from our waters. I have always been pleased with everything I've bought from him....so I bought a pound of it. Gonna try to make conch salad....I've been craving it since my keys trip last Christmas. I'll post up the results......now where's my beer!?!?

If you like conch there is no reason you won't like whelk prepared properly

Since I didn't use the whole pound in the salad, I sliced the remainder real thin and fried it up...tasted a lot like calamari.....just a little tougher....

I couldn't tell the difference between the whelk and the conch I had in the keys.

We sell conch (well now I found out its actually whelk) meat at my job. We get horse conchs in occasionally, they get caught in the nets and we got a few guys that bring them to us. I sell a good bit of it, ive never tried it. Thanks for the info, guys!
