Cape Lookout is but a hop skip and jump from Morehead City. So much for swimming at the Cape.
Morehead City, NC while the vessel 'Dawn Raider' out of Anchorage Marina in Atlantic Beach, NC was fishing for Striped
Bass (also locally known as Stripers), this Great White was hooked in the mouth but only resisted slightly for 15
minutes before it came up alongside the boat to have a look; long enough for one of the crew members to slip a rope around its tail !!! 'And that's when things heated up!! .

The Shark took off towing the 42 foot fishing boat backwards through the water at about 7 Knots. Just like in JAWS, the boat was taking
on water over the stern and the crew watched in horror as the shark would actually jump completely out of the water at
times. This went on for an hour before the shark finally drowned. She weighed in at 1035 LBS.

It is suspected she followed a weak El Nino current into local waters in search of food. Although mid 60 degree water is considered ideal
for these sharks, the larger ones can tolerate water in the low 50s.

Well I bought into it. I received it this morning in an email from my buddy in Hatteras. I quess we could call the marina to verify. Sorry if it is not real, I thought it was.

Mako, not a GW and it's a hoax. however, if you think they're not around here....you're sadly mistaken.

Saltnbattery, the one off WB was claimed to be around 16 ft, the one in the picture, was only measured to be 10ft, and weighing a little over 1000 lbs, couldnt imagine the one that was spotted of WB! Must have been close to 2000 lbs....

that's one hell of a mako. I thought the jaws looked awfully bloody for a quick fight and tail rope.

you better release a great white. Catching and keeping something on the endangered species list is not a good idea unless you like to pay heavy fines, spend some time in jail, and lose your boat, truck, and home. However that is one hell of a mako. you can tell by the shape of the teeth.

because, like me, he believed the initial post that it was a GWS. I've eaten Mako, but the one we got was 80 lbs. Do the bigger ones still taste as good? No way we could've landed this sucker.

HAHA!

This story had me fooled until I read that it was a Mako! Thats one huge Mako!

I thought the story was awfully fishy because if you where to hook a great white shark on a striped bass tackle I dont think he would even relize that he was hooked.

Also, Mythbusters did a show on the boat being dragged backwards to the point where water would come over the gunnel in the movie Jaws, and they proved it impossible, or a myth.

Also, now that I look at the photo closley, the shark is Blue ontop just as a mako is and he doesnt have the white Belly of a great white!

The 902 area code kind of gives it away. That and the fact that someone tried the same deal this week on SOL.
